EU, NATO referendums in Slovenia first in formerly communist Europe

Former Yugoslav republic Slovenia votes Sunday in simultaneous referendums on joining the EU and joining NATO that will be the first such adhesion referendums in formerly communist Europe.

The Mediterranean state of Malta approved joining the EU in a referendum March 8.

The calendar of future EU referendums is:

   Hungary         April 12
   Lithuania       May 10-11
   Slovakia        May 16-17
   Poland          June 8 (date not definitive)

Czech Republic June 15-16

   Estonia         September 14
   Latvia          September 20

Cyprus is not holding a referendum.

Slovenia is at this point the only one of seven NATO candidate countries to have scheduled a referendum on joining the Alliance.
