US mobilizes 24,000 more reservists

The US military mobilized about 24,000 more military and National Guard reservists this week to take part in a war with Iraq, bringing the total number of reservists on active duty to 212,617 people, the Defense Department announced Wednesday.

"This week, the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps each announce an increase of reservists on active duty in support of the partial mobilization," the department said in a statement.

The total number of reserve personnel currently on active duty in support of the partial mobilization for the Army National Guard and Army Reserve is 148,612; Naval Reserve 9,875; Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve, 30,783; Marine Corps Reserve, 19,711; and the Coast Guard Reserve, 3,636, the Pentagon said.
