Denmark rejects US request for helicopters for Afghanistan force
COPENHAGEN (AFP) Dec 11, 2003
Denmark has told the United States that it cannot comply with a request to supply combat and transport helicopters to the NATO-led force in Afghanistan, Defense Minister Svend-Aage Jensby said on Thursday.

"The United States asked a series of countries, including Denmark, if they wanted to contribute transport and combat helicopters to the International Security Assistance Force," Jensby said.

"But unfortunately we have no combat helicopters" in Denmark, he said, adding: "I would really like to have a few Apaches", referring to the US military's attack helicopters.

In addition, Denmark needs its transport helicopters for sea rescues, he said.

The minister, who was speaking after a meeting of parliament's foreign policy committee, recalled that Denmark contributed F-16 combat planes to ISAF in Afghanistan.

The planes were stationed in neighbouring Kyrghyzstan until September, when their mission ended.

Denmark also has about 100 troops in the ISAF force.
