Japanese FM to discuss proliferation, terrorism during Pakistan visit
ISLAMABAD (AFP) Aug 10, 2004
Japanese Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi will discuss terrorism, nuclear non-proliferation and regional issues in her first visit to Pakistan due to start late Tuesday, officials said.

Kawaguchi will call on President Pervez Musharraf and hold formal talks with her Pakistan counterpart Khurshid Kasuri, a foreign ministry official said.

She will also meet Prime Minister Chaudhry Shujaat and Finance Minister Shaukat Aziz, who is expected to succeed Shujaat later this month.

Japan is Pakistan's key aid donor and trade partner and has been urging it and South Asian rival India to sign the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.

Pakistan will reassure Japan on its measures to prevent any nuclear leaks to other countries in the wake of proliferation scandal early this year involving the father of its nuclear programme Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, the official said.
