A Marine officer on trial for a failed 2003 military revolt against Philippine President Gloria Arroyo surrendered on Thursday, two days after he escaped from a military jail, the authorities said. Second Lieutenant Junniebert Tubo turned himself in to Manila's GMA television station, whose reporters escorted him to a nearby military camp, military spokesmen said. Tubo had slipped away from his guards as he was being escorted to a higher-security jail at the Philippines Marines headquarters during heavy rain here on Tuesday. "I have no intention to escape," the officer told the television station in an interview. "I just wanted to go home to solve my family problems -- that's all," he added. Tubo is one of more than 300 soldiers facing court-martial for the June 27, 2003 takeover by rebel soldiers of a portion of Manila's financial district. The revolt was put down without bloodshed and the mutineers surrendered peacefully less than 24 hours later. All rights reserved. © 2005 Agence France-Presse.
