Israeli whistleblower Vanunu blasts US policy on nuclear proliferation
ATHENS (AFP) Sep 23, 2004
Israel's nuclear whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu, freed in April after 18 years in prison for revealing the Jewish state's nuclear ambitions, on Thursday slammed the United States for having double standards towards Israel and Iran over nuclear proliferation.

"The United States is pressuring Iran over its nuclear program, but it should do the same for Israel," Vanunu said in a telephone interview with the Greek private radio Flash.

He made the remarks despite a prohibition against speaking to foreign media set out at the time of his release.

"Everyone now knows what Israel has, and I hope the United States and the whole world will realize that to address the proliferation of nuclear weapons there should be one measure applicable to all states ... and not to forget what is happening in Israel," he said, according to the Greek translation of his remarks.

Vanunu said Israel has continued in recent years "to build a lot more nuclear weapons."

The former technician also slammed Israel's policy towards the Palestinians. "The (West Bank) wall is the worst thing that has been done so far. It shows that Israel does not want peace," he said.

Vanunu was sentenced in 1986 to 18 years in prison for "treason" and "espionage" after leaking top-secret details about the Dimona nuclear plant, where he was employed, to the Sunday Times.

At his release on April 21, Vanunu has been subject to a series of sweeping restrictions, including a ban on travelling abroad as well as holding unauthorized meetings with foreigners.
