Fire doused at US nuclear plant
MIAMI (AFP) Jun 27, 2005
A small fire ignited early Monday at the Turkey Point nuclear plant in Florida, but the blaze was extinguished in 25 minutes, according to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The NRC said some oil leaked out of a transformer during the incident and that a specialist team was investigating the cause of the fire.

The fire occurred in the early hours of Monday in a transformer at Turkey Point, 40 kilometers (23 miles) south of Miami, the NRC said.

"The fire was extinguished after approximately 25 minutes. On-site fire brigade and Miami-Dade fire department responded. The cause of the fire is under investigation," it said, adding that the plant's reactors were not damaged by the fire.

"Hazardous Material response is being implemented due to discharge of transformer oil.

"It is mineral oil, it is not petroleum based oil, which is relatively harmless, we think we have contained it, we don't believe it got into any of the canals or the bay or anything else," the NRC said.

"There was no danger to the community at any time."
