China's envoy to nuclear talks to meet his Japanese counterpart
TOKYO (AFP) Aug 22, 2005
Wu Dawei, China's chief delegate to six-nation talks on North Korea's nuclear arms program, will visit Tokyo this week to meet his Japanese counterpart Kenichiro Sasae, it was announced Monday.

The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday before the nuclear talks resume in Beijing next week after a three-week recess, the Japanese foreign ministry said.

Wu, the Chinese vice foreign minister, chairs the multilateral talks involving the two Koreas, China, the United States, Japan and Russia.

Sasae, head of the ministry's Asian and Oceanian affairs bureau, will also meet in Tokyo on Wednesday with Lee Jong Seok, deputy head of the South Korean National Security Council, to coordinate their views on the nuclear stand-off.

Sasae will also visit Washington later in the week for talks with Christopher Hill, who heads the US delegation to the talks.

The fourth round began in late July but was broken off after about two weeks amid an apparent deadlock over North Korea's insistence on its right to the peaceful use of atomic energy. The US rejects the demand.
