Key US Rhine-Main airbase in Germany closes FRANKFURT (AFP) Oct 10, 2005 The United States Air Force Rhein-Main airbase, a key military player in West Germany during the Cold War, finally closed its gates on Monday after 60 years in operation. The base played a vital role during the years of east-west tensions in central Europe until the collapse of communism, German reunification in 1990 and the reduction of NATO forces based in Germany. The symbolic closure was marked by a special ceremony. American activity was set to cease entirely at the end of December. The operators of nearby Frankfurt airport plan to take over the terrain for extensions to civilian traffic. All rights reserved. © 2005 Agence France-Presse.
