Iran Insists On Nuclear Right But 'Not Seeking Confrontation'

Tehran (AFP) Sep 21, 2005
Iran is determined to master the nuclear fuel cycle but does not want a confrontation with the West, hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Wednesday.

"The nuclear fuel cycle is a national demand," Ahmadinejad told a cabinet meeting, the student news agency ISNA reported. "It will take Iran to a higher level of development but the Western powers do not want that."

His comments came as the United States claimed Wednesday there was growing international support to report Iran to the UN Security Council over its nuclear activities.

However, a showdown over Western fears that it may secretly be developing nuclear weapons was delayed when Tehran's supporters forced an adjournment until Thursday of a key meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) board.

"We support the law... but we do not want confrontation and we are not going to court danger. (However) if they want to impose their will on us, the valiant Iranian people will resist."
