Pakistan Gets Approval For New Nuclear Plant

The global atomic watchdog has approved an agreement with Pakistan for its second nuclear power plant, being built with Chinese assistance, the foreign ministry said Saturday. The 35-member Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Thursday unanimously approved the safeguards agreement for Pakistan's Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit-2, the ministry said in a statement. "The approval of the agreement is a success for Pakistan and recognition of its non-proliferation commitments," it said and added that a similar safeguards agreement was also in place for Chashma-1 in the central Punjab province.

Finance minister Gordon Brown warned Saturday against unilateral British nuclear disarmament in a world where rogue states could acquire nuclear weapons. The chancellor of the exchequer, widely expected to take over as prime minister from Tony Blair next year, waded into the debate over replacing Britain's submarine-based Trident nuclear weapons system. The government is due to reveal its preferred option in December.

US And North Korea Set For Beijing Nuclear Talks

The United States and North Korea will hold talks in Beijing this week to discuss resuming six-party negotiations on Pyongyang's nuclear program, a Japanese report said on Sunday. US envoy Christopher Hill and North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan, the North's chief delegate in the talks, will meet as early as Tuesday, the Asahi Shimbun said quoting US and North Korean sources.

Iran Makes Concession To UN Nuclear Investigation

Iran has agreed to hand over records of its uranium enrichment work in a boost to UN efforts to determine whether Tehran seeks nuclear weapons, but diplomats and analysts said more cooperation is needed. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Mohamed ElBaradei told the IAEA's 35-nation board of governors on Thursday that Iran would finally provide the sought-after records.

Israel is seeking new ways to intercept Palestinian rockets fired from the Gaza Strip in mid-flight as its military proves unable to stop daily rocket fire from the territory, a senior official told AFP Thursday. Palestinian militants in Gaza have fired thousands of the homemade Qassam rockets at neighbouring Israeli communities in the past six years in attacks that have killed 10 people.

Ecosphere Robots Complete USNS Rainier At BAE

Ecosphere Technologieshas announced that it has completed another environmentally friendly coating removal project for BAE Systems at its San Francisco Ship Repair facility. Ecosphere through its wholly owned subsidiary, UltraStrip Envirobotic Solutions, removed the hull coatings on the USNS Rainier T-AOE7, a naval support ship. The agreement with BAE Systems is a five-year contract agreement for coating removal services using UltraStrip's high speed magnetically attached patented waterjetting robots.
