Germany's Rheinmetall Group reports that it will supply additional 35mm Oerlikin Millennium guns to the Royal Danish Navy.

The order for the weapon, which is similar to the U.S. Navy's Phalanx system, was made by Denmark's military procurement authorities and is worth about $21.5 million.

Spare parts and technical service are part of the order for the weapons to be shipped next year.

"Teamed with Rheinmetall's high-performance 35mm Ahead airburst ammunition, the Millennium gun gives the Danish Navy a close-range self-defense capability for protecting high-value assets that is second to none," Rhinmetall said. "A multi-purpose weapon system, it is also capable of neutralizing asymmetric and symmetric threats alike, whether on the surface or in the air."

The Rheinmetall Group won an initial order from Denmark for the Oerlikon Millennium gun in 2005.

It is expected the guns will be installed on the Danish Navy's Absalon-class transport ships and/or the new Iver Huitfeldt-class frigate. The guns will be managed by SaabTech CEROS fire control systems and Terma command and control technology.
