General Dynamics receives $272.2M for M1A2 Abrams upgrades

General Dynamics Land Systems has received a $270.2 million contract to provide, install, and integrate components for M1A2 SEPv2 and SEPv3 Abrams main battle tanks, the Department of Defense announced on Monday.

The contract will provide System Enhancement Package v2 legacy components for 45 M1A2 SEPv3 tanks and 60 additional sets of SEPv2 and SEPv3 parts. Tooling, test, and support equipment will also be included.

Work will primarily be performed at Lima Army Tank Plant in Ohio, and other sites in the United States, with a projected completion date of Aug. 21, 2019. The Army has already obligated $270.2 million for the contract.

The M1A2 SEP are upgraded versions of the M1A2 Abrams tank. The original SEP added improved depleted uranium armor inserts to the baseline M1A2 for added protection along with other upgrades.

SEPv2 versions include upgraded computers, improved front and side armor, a improved transmission, new infrared sensors and a Common Remotely Operated Weapons Station for the .50 machine gun.

SEPv3 will improve power generation, networking capabilities and have a lower-profile CROWS system.

The M1A2 Abrams is the standard main battle tank of the U.S. and many allied militaries. It is a derivative of the original M1 tank with a 120mm gun, depleted uranium armor inserts, and other improvements.

Over 10,000 Abrams tanks of all variants have been produced since its introduction in 1980. It has been widely exported to militaries across the world and is expected to remain the primary U.S. tank, with upgrades, for years to come.
