Lockheed Martin Announces Team For Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System II

Lockheed Martin has announced its industry team for the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) increment II competition: HR Textron; Honeywell Defense and Space (D&S) Electronics Systems; EaglePicher; and ITT Power Solutions.

HR Textron will supply the control actuation system; Honeywell D&S the inertial sensor assembly (ISA); EaglePicher the thermal battery; and ITT Power Solutions the power supply. In addition, General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products will supply the rocket motor, warhead and fuze for the initial production APKWS II rounds.

"We have assembled the best possible team for APKWS II," said Rick Edwards, vice president - Tactical Missiles, for Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. "These suppliers are all leaders in their respective fields. Their expertise will help Lockheed Martin substantially reduce program cost and risk."

"Our APKWS II team already has in place the experience and production capability to keep costs low and meet an aggressive schedule to get this much-needed capability to our Armed Forces quickly," said Steve Barnoske, director of Tactical Missiles at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control.

"Consider, for example, the thousands of control actuation systems HR Textron has produced for the warfighter. When you put that kind of capability on top of the warm production lines we have ready to go for the seeker and for final rocket assembly, we can offer the most affordable, lowest-risk solution."

The APKWS II is a 2.75-inch laser-guided rocket that will provide crews of the U.S. Army Apache and Marine Corps Cobra attack helicopters and other platforms with precision-strike capability against non-armored targets that do not require a 7-inch HELLFIRE missileżan option not presently available. This low-cost alternative will destroy low-value but dangerous targets that are close to civilian assets and/or friendly forces.

HR Textron is an industry leader in control actuation systems and components for commercial and military application and has worked with Lockheed Martin on several proposal and company-funded efforts.

Honeywell has successfully executed hundreds of inertial sensors and systems programs, primarily military, over the past 35 years. Lockheed Martin and Honeywell have a long history of program partnerships.

EaglePicher is the most diversified battery manufacturer in the world and currently is a subcontractor on four Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control programs including the Longbow Hellfire for which it has made over 35,000 batteries.

ITT Power Solutions is a leading supplier, designer and manufacturer of high- and low-voltage power supplies for military and commercial markets.

General Dynamics is the manufacturer of the Hydra 70 rocket, the unguided precursor to APKWS II which the Government has specified to be used for low-rate initial production on APKWS II.
