ONR Selects LockMart Team For Sense And Respond Logistics Phase II

A Lockheed Martin-led team received a U.S. Navy contract to continue development of an automated logistics system that will help Marines plan and re-evaluate missions based on real-time battlefield data.

In Phase II of the Sense and Respond Logistics program, Lockheed Martin and its partners will develop and refine the information architecture prototype designed and delivered to the Office of Naval Research (ONR) under a Phase I contract.

Phase II work will serve as the foundation for a decision support capability that will combine mission planning information with data from networked sensors on vehicles and other assets in the battlefield.

The ability to combine plans with real-time data will speed up many aspects of planning and assessment, support the decision-making process for moving people and equipment to accomplish missions and help evaluate options, develop alternatives, and review the impact of decisions on other parts of the plan.

"The Sense and Respond Logistics program will enable commanders to more accurately assess their environment, identify when a plan is executing differently than intended, and help develop alternatives ahead of real time," explained Tony Seman, ONR program manager.

"The technology developed for the program will combine the commander's intent with 'ahead of real time' data and use that information to develop potential courses of action and evaluate the impact of those decisions."

The Lockheed Martin-led team is comprised of Lockheed Martin's Simulation, Training and Support (STS), Advanced Technology Laboratories and Mission Systems and Sensors businesses, and subcontractors Coordinated Software Systems, Concurrent Technologies Corporation and Viecore FSD.

"This is a great opportunity for Lockheed Martin to partner with the ONR to integrate mission planning, assessment and execution in a net-centric, agile and responsive environment," said Debra Palmer, Lockheed Martin STS vice president of logistics. "By working with the customer to modernize logistics programs, we hope to help them prepare them for tomorrow through real-time information and decision-making capabilities."

Lockheed Martin is leveraging experience and capabilities from similar programs including the Embedded Platform Logistics System developed for the U.S. Marines; the U.K. Ministry of Defence's Joint Asset Management and Engineering Solutions software program, and the Autonomic Logistics Information System on board the F-35 Lightning II fifth generation fighter aircraft.

This Phase II contract is valued at $2.9 million and runs through November 2011.
