Teledyne Awarded Army Contract For Third Generation Infrared Imaging Sensors

Teledyne Technologies have announced that Teledyne Imaging Sensors has been awarded a $3.8 million contract by Alion Science and Technology on behalf of the U.S. Army's Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate to deliver prototypes of third generation dual-band infrared imaging sensors. The imagers are being developed to support the Army's goal of providing warfighters with the ability to identify threats on the battlefield before the enemy can detect their presence.

"Dual-band cameras provide simultaneous operation in both the long and medium wavelength infrared bands, allowing the Army to detect targets at long range through smoke and dust and then identify them," said Robert Mehrabian, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated. "The large format focal plane arrays employed in the dual-band imagers are based on Mercury Cadmium Telluride detector material, which can be optimized for specific wavelengths of light."

Teledyne Imaging Sensors, based in Camarillo, Calif., specializes in detectors and camera subsystems for infrared and visible imaging, for markets including ground/air military, deep space, and planetary science, weather satellites, unmanned air vehicles, space surveillance and earth remote sensing. Teledyne Imaging Sensors was formerly a division of Rockwell Scientific Company which Teledyne acquired in September 2006.

Lockheed Martin has received a $42 million contract to provide U.S. Army surveillance aircraft with next-generation technology that will enable them to precisely locate the source of modern communication signals. Called Communications High Accuracy Location Sub-systems - Compact (CHALS-C), the system features improved processing speed, enhanced capability and is substantially smaller and lighter than the current systems.
