ESI Introduces EsiProbe, An Alternative To Fixed Probes For Laser Trims
Portland OR (SPX) Aug 19, 2004
Electro Scientific Industries Thursday introduced its new motorized probe mechanism, esiProbe, an innovative approach to laser trimming. esiProbe provides a single-pass solution for complex hybrids by eliminating both the requirement of maintaining many fixed probe cards and the extra time required for handling the parts.

The company additionally announced that BAE Systems placed the first order for esiProbe.

Replacing standard fixed probe cards with ESI's new programmable, motorized probe option for laser trimming applications reduces valuable pre-production time and creates a high return on investment.

With esiProbe, manufacturing organizations no longer need to use new probe cards every time a design changes prior to production or invest in expensive fixed probes for fast-turn runs or prototypes. It is ideal for small run and quick-turn jobs and also provides a lower-cost answer for pre-production runs before a design is fixed.

Available now with the ESI Model 4410 laser trimming system, esiProbe will soon be available on Models 4990 and 4300.

BAE Systems, an international company that designs, manufactures, and supports advanced defense and aerospace systems, has selected esiProbe along with ESI's Model 4410 to increase the flexibility of its production facility, while reducing costs and compressing production schedules.

The motorized probes shipped to BAE Systems during ESI's fourth quarter of fiscal 2004.

"For us, the decision to implement ESI's motorized probe cards in our manufacturing facility was an easy one," said John Green, microelectronics group manager, Avionic Group, BAE Systems.

"It is clear the esiProbe technology will allow us to save valuable pre-production time while designs are in flux, and reduce our capital investment in low-volume production runs. There is no downside; esiProbe is easily interchangeable with conventional probe card frames when appropriate."
