New York NY (SPX) Sep 28, 2004
L-3 Communications announced Thursday that its Vertex Aerospace subsidiary (L-3 Vertex) has been awarded a one-year, $47 million contract to provide Contractor Logistics Support and operation of the Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department (AIMD) for Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR). With the exercise of four, one-year option periods, the total contract value is $216.7 million.

Approximately 200 L-3 Vertex employees will provide aircraft maintenance, piloting, supply and depot-level services supporting the Undergraduate Military Flight Officer Training System (UMFOTS) program and the AIMD.

Aircraft include the T-39N/G, T-2C and UH-3H. The AIMD includes support of a variety of aircraft, components and systems. Work will be performed at Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola, FL (60 percent) with AIMD services performed at NAS Corpus Christi, TX (40 percent).

L-3 Vertex has been the incumbent contractor supporting the T-39 for the UMFOTS program since 1994. The scope of the follow-on competition was expanded to include the additional aircraft platforms and AIMD. The UMFOTS mission is to prepare Naval Flight Officers, Air Force navigators and foreign military students.

"The UMFOTS program is a tremendously important asset to the U.S. Navy and other service branches, as well as allied governments who utilize this state-of-the-art flight officer training system," said Dan Grafton, president of L-3 Vertex.

"We are thrilled to be selected to be part of this expanded program supporting not only the T-39 as we've done for the past 10 years, but also the T-2, UH-3 and the AIMD."

For the T-39N/G, L-3 Vertex will provide maintenance, repair and logistics support on the aircraft, radar systems, airframe and aircraft subsystems, mission support equipment and spares.

The T-2 trainer and UH-3H Search and Rescue helicopter will be supported through Organizational and Intermediate level aircraft maintenance. For the AIMD, L-3 Vertex will service batteries and a variety of other components for the T-34, T-44, T-39, T-1A, T-6, TC-130, TH-57 and F/A-18 aircraft.

L-3 Vertex Aerospace provides aviation and aerospace technical services, primarily to government customers. The company has 10,700 employees working from 300 locations worldwide. L-3 Vertex is a subsidiary of L-3 Communications Integrated Systems.
