Smiths Detection Announces Order From The TSA
Pine Brook NJ (SPX) Oct 13, 2004
Smiths Detection Tuesday announced it has been awarded a contract by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for its Sentinel II explosive detection walk-through portals. The company received an initial order from the TSA for five portals, with an option for an undisclosed number of additional machines in the future.

The Sentinel II portals will be deployed in U.S. airports as part of the TSA's field trials to review the systems' performance and impact on terminal operations.

"We are pleased to have received this order from the TSA," said Bill Mawer, President, Smiths Detection North America. "The Sentinel II has the highest throughput of any scanner and has already been deployed in major nuclear facilities and in other applications such as popular tourist destinations."

The Sentinel II is a non-invasive walk-through scanner that can screen up to 420 people per hour. The portal operates automatically, passing air gently over the body to release particles that are naturally absorbed by or cling to a person's clothing or body.

These particles are then drawn into the instrument for analysis. Detection of these particles or vapors can indicate that a person is either carrying an explosive device or has come into contact with explosive substances.
