Tyco Fire & Security Contracted By British MoD To Supply Scott Respiratory Equipment
Boca Raton FL (SPX) Dec 02, 2004
Scott Health & Safety, a part of Tyco Fire & Security, has been awarded an exclusive contract to supply the British Ministry of Defense (MoD) with a new military respiratory protection kit. Known as the General Service Respirator (GSR), the kit includes a newly designed mask and filter along with associated products.

The Scott GSR will be issued to all UK Service personnel and entitled civilians.

The initial contract is valued in excess of $70 million. With replacements, spare parts, and systems for new recruits, the potential total value of the contract, including the service life of the Scott GSR, is expected to be in excess of $200 million.

"We are obviously delighted to have been awarded this contract and clearly it places Tyco at the pinnacle of military respiratory systems design. The opportunity to develop this technology with appropriate military customers is expected to generate significant revenue for the company," said Ron Krisanda, President Tyco Safety Products.

This contract award follows a detailed 14-month assessment phase and a subsequent competitive selection program. The British MoD's extensive testing confirmed that the Scott GSR is "No mere gas mask. It will give our troops an unparalleled level of protection from all manner of threats-from biological and chemical weaponry to industrial chemicals and other hazardous airborne materials," according to Lord Bach, UK Minister for Defense Procurement.

Scott's GSR was designed and tested to provide improved integration with current and future weapons systems and to reduce the physiological and psychological burdens on wearers.

Scott Health & Safety has long held a leadership position in the design and manufacture of respiratory protection products for military, first responder and industrial applications.

Since earning its first contract with the Royal Air Force in the run up to World War II, the company has continued to build on a reputation for quality, reliability, and durability. Today, Scott is an important supplier to the U.S. and U. K. defense forces and a number of NATO and other U.S. allies worldwide.

"The user requirement document for the GSR set very precise performance standards. Building on MoD sponsored research run by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory at Porton Down, England, Scott was required to develop a series of new, and where appropriate, patented technologies to achieve the targets set," said Nigel Holmes, Scott's Program director for GSR.
