ATK Tests Advanced 155mm Projectile

Alliant Techsystems announced today that it successfully tested its advanced, 155mm precision projectile - Saber. Saber offers the U.S. Army a design capability and a low per unit cost for the Block 1B upgrade to the Excalibur program. Saber was fired from a 155mm cannon, using a Zone-5 charge, the most powerful charge configuration used by U.S. forces. Saber will give artillery batteries a precision-fire capability with significantly more stand-off range than current 155mm artillery.

Iran And Syria Sign Defense Agreement

Defense ministers from close allies Iran and Syria on Thursday signed an agreement for military cooperation against what they called the "common threats" presented by Israel and the United States. In a joint press conference, Iranian Defense Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar and visiting Syrian counterpart Hassan Turkmani said their talks had been aimed at consolidating their defense efforts and strengthening support for one another.

Japan Doubts North Korean Missile Test Imminent

Japan on Thursday downplayed the possibility of an imminent missile test by North Korea after its ally the United States warned of a response if Pyongyang carries out a long-range launch. "We are not in an extremely serious situation," Foreign Minister Taro Aso said when asked about the string of the reports that North Korea is planning to test-fire an intercontinental ballistic missile.

New American Non-Nuclear ICBM Creates Global Dangers

On May 22, The Washington Post carried an article "A Missile Strike Option We Need" by two former U.S. Secretaries of Defense - Harold Brown, 1977-1981. and James Schlesinger, 1973-1975. Brown and Schlesinger suggested installing non-nuclear warheads on U.S. strategic missiles, first of all, Trident II D5 submarine-launched ballistic missiles, or SLBMs, which have multiple independently targeted reentry vehicles, or MIRVs.

Raytheon Tests Projectile with Semi-Active Laser Seeker

Raytheon successfully flight tested its Mid Range Munition Chemical Energy (MRM-CE) guided projectile with semi-active laser seeker (SAL) at the U.S. Army's Yuma, Ariz., Proving Grounds May 4. The round was fired from an M1A2 SEP (System Enhancement Program) tank at a moving target at a range of about 5.4 miles (8.7 kilometers).

US Military Death Toll In Iraq Hits 2500

The US military death toll in Iraq climbed to 2,500 Thursday with the combat death of a marine as Congress approved another 66 billion dollars for the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. The White House lamented the toll, calling it "a sad benchmark," but said President George W. Bush believed they did not die in vain.
