Israel Could Abandon Own Missiles For US System
Jerusalem (AFP) Jan 02, 2007
Israel is considering halting the development of a new generation of its Arrow defense missiles due to the high costs involved in favour of US-made missiles, the Haaretz newspaper reported Tuesday. Following negotiations in recent months, Israeli leaders will make a final decision on whether to phase out the Arrow, or Hetz, missiles and opt instead for the US-made THAAD missile defense system in the coming year, it said. The THAAD missile, made by Lockheed Martin, could be delivered to Israel in 2009, according to sources in Washington quoted by the newspaper.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Tuesday kept up his defiance over Iran's nuclear programme, saying Tehran would deal an "historic slap" to Western nations if they launched military action. Ahmadinejad also vowed that Iran would press ahead with its atomic drive despite the UN Security Council's decision to impose its first ever sanctions against the Islamic republic.

Pakistan and India on Monday exchanged lists of their nuclear sites under an agreement to swap such information annually on New Year's Day to prevent attacks against each others nuclear facilities, the foreign ministry said. The agreement signed in 1988 between the South Asian arch rivals came into force in 1991 and the first such exchange of information was on January 1, 1992.

The New Bush Order
Paris (UPI) Jan 02, 2007
Not since the grimmest days of the Cold War has a New Year has opened with such a sense of foreboding for the United States. The sky is darkening with the flocks of chickens coming home to roost. The wretched mismanagement of the Iraq occupation has drained American credibility as a superpower and as the linchpin of the global economy.

Dems Slam Border Screening Rules
Washington (UPI) Jan 02, 2007
A computer system that screens those arriving in the United States for potential indicators of terrorist activity is in danger of violating the Fourth Amendment, says the incoming chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee.

Never Again
Washington (UPI) Jan 02, 2007
Through history, rulers, despots, nations and empires have humbled and humiliated, and with the advent of Adolph Hitler, massacred Jews by the millions. From the Exodus from ancient Egypt to the First Crusade, which didn't distinguish between Jews and Arabs, to the Spanish Inquisition under Tomas de Torquemada, to Czarist pogroms, to the World War II Nazi genocide.

Another Year In Iraq
Washington (UPI) Jan 02, 2007
There was a grim, ironic symmetry to the execution of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein at the end of 2006. Saddam's execution symbolized the past year in Iraq -- it was all about death. For 2006 was the year when the Bush administration's vision of democracy failed in Iraq. Far from ushering in a new era of peace, stability and security, the parliamentary elections a year ago created a new political dynamic that within little more than two months unleashed a sectarian civil war on Iraq far worse than anything the country had known in modern times.

Will The Execution Of Saddam Heal Iraq
Washington (UPI) Jan 02, 2007
Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was executed by hanging early Saturday morning in a Baghdad security facility where, ironically, many of his opponents were put to death during his rule, The former dictator walked his final steps escorted by several masked men who placed a hangman's noose around his neck, while some made references to Moqtada Sadr, the Shiite cleric who had numerous members of his family, including his father, killed by Saddam.

It makes the year that just elapsed the deadliest year since 1994, according to the Paris-based media watchdog, Reporters Without Borders. Another 871 journalists were arrested; 1,472 were physically attacked or threatened; 912 media outlets were censored.

Controversial Russian contracts to sell anti-aircraft weapons to Syria and Iran are being fulfilled on schedule, Russian news agencies cited defence and industry officials as saying Tuesday. An Afghani Test Of Will For Europe
Washington (UPI) Jan 02, 2007
On Sept. 12, 2001, the European allies rose as one in support of the United States, struck by terrorists the day before. For the first time in its history, the North Atlantic Council invoked NATO's cardinal commitment, the "all for one" pledge to defend any ally subject to aggression. European nations were not motivated by sentiment or charity. They knew that at some point, al-Qaida would target them.
