Mishap In Dismantling Nuclear Warhead

A watchdog group charges a nuclear warhead nearly exploded in Texas when it was being dismantled at the government's Pantex facility near Amarillo. The Project on Government Oversight says it has been told by knowledgeable experts that the warhead nearly detonated in 2005 because an unsafe amount of pressure was applied while it was being disassembled, The Austin American-Statesman reports.

Northrop Grumman ICBM Propulsion System Rocket Engine Life Extension Program

The U.S. Air Force has awarded Northrop Grumman Corporation a contract for 22 months to continue the full-rate production phase of the intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) Propulsion System Rocket Engine (PSRE) Life Extension Program (LEP). The PSRE is the fourth and final stage rocket engine on the Minuteman III missile. This LEP effort involves refurbishing and replacing aged flight hardware and ordnance in this stage to maintain alert-readiness of the missiles.

US To Announce New Nuclear Warhead

The United States is expected to announce next week a major step forward in the building of the country's first new nuclear warhead in nearly two decades, The New York Times reported on its website Saturday. The newspaper said the US government will propose combining elements of competing designs from two weapons laboratories in an approach that some experts argue is untested and risky.

Russia Says US Sanctions On Arms Dealers Illegal

Russia hit back Saturday at the United States after Washington had imposed sanctions on three Russian firms for exporting weapons to Libya and Iran, branding the US action "illegal". "The United States are not for the first time trying to extend their national laws illegally to foreign countries, forcing them to work according to Aemrican rules," the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.

Bush's new Iraq strategy calls for a rapid influx of as many as 20,000 new US combat troops to Baghdad, supplemented with a jobs program for Iraq costing as much as one billion dollars, The New York Times reported Sunday. Citing unnamed US officials who are working on the plan, the newspaper reported that Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki formally agreed in a long teleconference with Bush on Thursday to match the US troop increase by sending three more Iraqi brigades to Baghdad over the next month and a half.

Iran Warns It Will Respond Instantly To Any Aggression

Iran will respond instantly to any aggression against the Islamic Republic, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said Sunday. The diplomat said Israel's possible attack on Iranian nuclear facilities will not affect the will of the people of Iran to continue civilian nuclear activities.

Report On Israeli Iran Strike Incorrect Says Foreign Ministry

Israel said Sunday that a report in The Sunday Times that the Jewish state had drawn up plans to destroy Iran's uranium enrichment facilities in a tactical nuclear strike was "incorrect." The story is "incorrect," foreign ministry spokesman Mark Regev said. "Israel is 100 percent behind the international community's efforts to bring about an end to Iran's nuclear program. Israel totally supports Resolution 1737 and the international community must be ready to take even tougher measures against Iran," he said.

US Seeks Help From Japan With Laser-based Missile Defense

The United States is seeking Japanese assistance to develop a laser system aboard military aircraft that shoots down ascending missiles, a press report said Saturday. The Japanese government will shortly consult local companies for interest in the project likely to require development of high technology as well as massive funding inputs, the business newspaper Nikkei reported.

North Korea Fully Prepared For Second Nuclear Test Says South

North Korea appears fully prepared to carry out a second nuclear test but is unlikely to go ahead in the immediate future, a South Korean legislator said Sunday. Chung Hyung-Keun, who served as a deputy chief of the National Intelligence Service in the 1990s, said unusual personnel and construction activity had recently been detected at Punggye in the northeast where the first nuclear test was staged on October 9.

US And North Korea To Meet This Month

South Korean Foreign Minister Song Min-Soon said Sunday he expected the United States and North Korea to resume critical talks later this month on US sanctions on Pyongyang. The US military in Iraq has confiscated Saddam Hussein's books as well as notes and poems he wrote in jail to "screen" them before returning them to his lawyers, one of his attorneys said on Sunday. "We asked the Americans to hand us the books the president (Saddam) read in jail as well as the notes and poems he wrote but they want to screen them and read them in full before giving them to us," Jordanian lawyer Issam al-Ghazzawi told AFP.
