Air Force Vision Embraces Warfighters, Heritage

Heritage, future innovations and focus on the joint warfighter are three key points in the newly released Air Force Vision document, "Lasting Heritage...Limitless Horizons: A Warfighter's Vision." This vision document, released to Airmen worldwide Feb. 28, replaces the older "Vision 2020" version, which was released in 1997, and focused on preparation for the then-upcoming turn of the century.

Boeing GMD Team Launches Target, Tests Upgraded Radar

A Boeing-led industry team and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA) have successfully completed a test of key parts of the Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) system. During today's test, a newly upgraded radar at Beale Air Force Base, Calif., demonstrated its capability by tracking a long-range ballistic missile target launched from Kodiak, Alaska.

Boeing ScanEagle UAV Surpasses 10,000 Combat Flight Hours

ScanEagle, a long-endurance fully autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle developed by Boeing and The Insitu Group, has surpassed 10,000 combat flight hours in less than two years supporting U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Navy operations. Since being deployed with the First Marine Expeditionary Force in August 2004, ScanEagle has completed 8,900 combat flight hours in Iraq, providing real-time imagery to tactical commanders.

Ceradyne Receives Ceramic Body Armor Contract

Ceradyne announced the receipt of a $42.8 million delivery order for its lightweight ceramic body armor. This is the eighth delivery order received under the $461 million indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (ID/IQ) contract announced on August 20, 2004. Including this delivery order, orders received under this contract total approximately $335 million, with approximately $126 million in unplaced options.

Harris Awarded Contract By Lockheed Martin For Undersea Surveillance

Harris has announced that it has been awarded a three-year, $27.8 million contract by Lockheed Martin Maritime Systems and Sensors to develop and integrate a water-deployable communications system for the U.S. Navy's Advanced Deployable System (ADS). ADS is a littoral (coastal) undersea surveillance system designed to provide a joint-forces commander with a continuous and reliable picture of activity over vast oceanic areas.

India Hikes Military Spending 7.2 Percent In 2006-07

India on Tuesday hiked military spending by 7.2 percent to 890 billion rupees (19.8 billion dollars) in its budget for the year to March 2007 to fund ongoing modernisation, the finance minister said. "This will include 374 billion rupees for capital expenditure," Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said in reference to the country's plans to upgrade military hardware for its armed forces.

New Missiles For The Australian Defence Force

Lockheed Martin's Joint Air-to-Surface Stand-off Missile (or JASSM) has been selected as the new long range air-to-surface missile to equip the Australian Defence Force's F/A-18 Hornet fleet. The acquisition of long range missiles does not represent a change in Australia's defence posture and capability planning.

Putin Optimistic Iran Will Return To Nuclear Control Mechanism

Russia is optimistic that Iranian negotiators will agree to return to an international protocol limiting Tehran's nuclear activities, Russian President Vladimir Putin said here Tuesday. "We are optimists and consider we can come to an agreement with our Iranian interlocutors about returning Iran to the additional protocol," Putin said during a visit to Hungary.

US Japan Drill On North Korea threat

North Korea and China are imaginary enemies in military drills the United States and Japan have been conducting. The exercises started om since Feb. 23, the Japanese newspaper Sankei Shimbun reported Tuesday. The command post exercises, dubbed Keen Edge, will continue through Friday and come ahead of air, land and sea drills Japan's Self Defense Force are scheduled to start at the end of March, the paper said.

US Troops In Iraq Want American Exit Within A Year

A wide-ranging poll of US troops serving in Iraq made public Tuesday found that 72 percent believe the United States should exit Iraq within a year. At the same time, 53 percent of the respondents said the number of US troops and bombing missions should be doubled to control the insurgency, according to the poll results.
