British Army extends support contract with Saab for simulator system

U.S. Army taps Oshkosh for recapitalized tactical trucks
(UPI) Apr 13, 2017 - Oshkosh Defense received three separate contracts from the U.S. Army for the procurement of recapitalized Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Trucks.

The agreements, all announced on Wednesday, task the company with supplying new and updated capabilities for the tactical trucks. The contracts have a combined value of almost $260 million.

Recapitalization efforts will include work on palletized load systems, self-recovery wenches and other supporting components.

The U.S. Department of Defense expects work on two of the contracts to be complete by August 2018, and work on the third to be finished by October of that same year.

The U.S. Army Contracting Command will oversee all three contracts.

Oshkosh's Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Trucks, or HEMTTs, are heavy transport platforms used to resupply combat vehicles and weapon systems on the battlefield. The truck entered service with the Army in 1985, replacing the M520 Goer trucks.

The British Army is extending its contract with Saab, continuing the company's support for the Direct Fire Weapon Effects Simulator.

The three-year contract extension is valued at approximately $25 million, and will go into effect during the first quarter of 2017.

The Direct Fire Weapon Effects Simulator, or DFWES, is a high-fidelity laser-based training simulation platform designed to prepare troops to respond to direct and indirect fire on the battlefield. The system can simulate various ammunition types, including those used by main battle tanks.

Operators can also use the platform to perform counter-IED exercises. It incorporates full-motion video and data collection capabilities, allowing users to evaluate their performance.

"This new contract, extending the use of the capability, is a proof of the strong relationship between Saab and the British Army, and a renewal of our commitment as a highly trusted complete training provider to a leading military customer," Saab's Åsa Thegström said in a press release.

Britain also uses the system to support training programs for the Royal Air Force and Royal Marines.
