Building Integrated Solar PV Installation for Halifax Office Tower
by Staff Writers
Toronto, Canada (SPX) Dec 11, 2012

BIPV materials are designed to replace conventional construction materials within the outer envelope of a building including roof, skylights, glazing, exterior surfaces and facades.

Eclipsall and Ferguson-Neudorf Glass have announced that the two companies are collaborating on the manufacture of building-integrated PV (BIPV) modules for the 22 storey TD Halifax Tower in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The project will employ 300Wp frameless glass-on-glass PV modules installed and used as a street level canopy along the south and west facades of the building.

Also, there will be 190Wp frameless glass-on-glass window shading modules installed on the south facade of the structure.

This installation enables the building owner to achieve LEED Gold Status on this project as defined by LEED Core and Shell 2009, which achieves 2 credits for 1/2% (.005), or 4 credits for 1% (.01) of the total predicted energy demand of the building.

BIPV materials are designed to replace conventional construction materials within the outer envelope of a building including roof, skylights, glazing, exterior surfaces and facades.

In addition to producing electricity, BIPV installations add structural value and can enhance a building's aesthetic quality and design. .

"The BIPV market is expected to undergo a significant growth period, said Les Lyster, CEO of Eclipsall.

"It is a natural extension of our business to develop products for this market and we see Ferguson-Neudorf as a key partner in realizing this objective."

"This is an ideal partnership", said David Beckham, Director of BIPV at Ferguson-Neudorf. "Our Company has deep experience designing curtain wall solutions for architects and Eclipsall has the manufacturing capability to produce these new BIPV products."

Architects for this project are Lydon, Lynch Architects of Halifax, one of the premier architectural firms in Atlantic Canada and well known for projects that incorporate sustainable development features.

Flexible solar cells could be in clothing
University Park, Pa. (UPI) Dec 6, 2012
The day may come when the shirt on your back can charge your cellphone, say U.S. researchers who've helped developed flexible, foldable solar cells. Scientists at Penn State, who worked with international colleagues, said the silicon-based optical fiber with solar-cell capabilities can be made to almost any length and paves the way for flexible, curved or twisted solar fabrics.
