Engility Holdings to support EW modernization
Chantilly, Va. (UPI) Apr 17, 2013 - Modification of electronic warfare weapons systems for U.S. Navy and Australian military aircraft is to receive technology support from Engility Holdings Inc.

Engility said the support contract, a re-compete win for the company, is for systems on several aircraft and was issued by the U.S. Naval Warfare Center, Weapons Division. It's a five-year single-award, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract with a value of $40 million.

"We are honored to continue our work supporting the U.S. Navy and the electronics warfare weapons system contract," said Engility President and Chief Executive Officer Tony Smeraglinolo. "The highly-skilled Engility team working on this program has done an outstanding job and I know they are very proud to support our Navy customer."

Aircraft that will receive the EW modifications are the EA-6B, EA-18G, MH-60R, BAMS and P-8A.

Engility said the contract also covers support for unmanned air systems, flight simulators and training systems and advanced electronic attack derivatives and initiatives.

Support services include systems engineering, in-service hardware and software engineering, intelligence data analysis, test and evaluation, EW data and systems development, threat analysis, threat defeat and mission planning, the company said.

Japan National Police order another AW139
Tokyo (UPI) Apr 17, 2013 - AgustaWestland reports the Japan National Police have ordered another AW139 helicopter, bringing the number of prefectures using its aircraft to 40.

The AW139 is a medium size, twin engine aircraft with a maximum speed of 193 miles per hour, a range of 675 miles and an endurance of nearly six hours.

The helicopter's law enforcement configuration features a rescue hoist, search light, auxiliary tank and dedicated avionic systems, including an enhanced ground proximity warning system and enhanced vision system.

The helicopter ordered by the National Police will enter service in the Kagoshima Prefecture next year.

"This order represents the 9th Prefecture to operate the AW139 helicopter in a law enforcement role and underpins the strength of AgustaWestland's products in the extremely competitive law enforcement market where over recent years we have gained significant market share," said Andrew Symonds, president of AgustaWestland Japan.

AgustaWestland said more than 620 AW139s are in service around the world and that it has orders for more than 750 of the aircraft from 60 countries.

Diligent Consulting Inc. is to provide system administration, engineering and management support services for the U.S. Air Force under a NETCENTS-2 contract.

Services under the NETCENTS-2 Application Services Small Business contract vehicle are to be performed by Diligent -- and its teammate NCI Information Systems Inc. -- for the Air Force Network Cyber Integration Division, the Air Force Network Theater Deployable Communications, and the Gateway Integration and Test Facilities at Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts.

The contract from the Air Force Network Support Branch, Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, is worth $1.7 million.

"Diligent understands the criticality of the AFNet infrastructure as it provides the warfighter with full access to real-time command-and-control information for day-to-day operations and contingencies," said Rick Riney, Diligent's chief operating officer. "As a NETCENTS-2 prime contractor, Diligent is extremely proud to be supporting our warfighters in every environment and location that the AFNet system operates in."

The Air Force Network system is a portfolio of programs that ensures effective design, deployment, and maintenance of the service's high-speed, high-capacity digital communications infrastructure.

Decoy system passes tests
London (UPI) Apr 18, 2013 - New decoy technology for fast-moving military aircraft has successfully passed testing, paving the way for its production by Selex ES.

The system is named BriteCloud Expendable Active Decoy, a self-contained digital RF memory jammer for fast jet aircraft, providing an off-board capability to decoy RF-guided missiles and fire control radars.

"We had already done a huge amount of testing, including extensive computer modelling and ground-based sled trials, so we were confident in the performance of BriteCloud," said Pete Forrest, vice president of Marketing and Sales for Electronic Warfare at Selex ES. "That said, it's great to have put the decoy in a real-life scenario and seen it perform exactly as intended, which will reassure some potential customers who maybe didn't quite believe that this technology is as far ahead of our competition as we've just proven."

In the end-to-end tests, BriteCloud decoys were launched from a fighter aircraft that was being tracked by a ground-based fire-control radar. The decoys detected the threat radar and jammed the threats with their jammer.

BriteCloud is the same size and shape as a flare and dispensed from a standard 55mm flare cartridge. Aircraft manufacturer Saab of Sweden will offer the decoy system as an electronic warfare enhancement option for its Gripen fighters.
