Friedrichshafen, Germany (SPX) Nov 11, 2005 EADS is to equip the Eurofighter combat aircraft of Germany, Great Britain, Spain, Italy and Austria as well as the Tornado combat aircraft of the German Armed Forces with a total of 364 Digital Map Generator systems (DMG). As the company announced on Thursday, orders worth a total of approximately EUR 50 million have been placed with EADS Defence Electronics. Digital map generators create raster and vector maps of the relevant operational area for the pilot in the cockpit, the display from the point of view of the flight direction appearing in real time. In addition, the generators allow information relevant to the flight (e.g. flight corridors or approach and departure procedures) to be overlaid. A further benefit for the pilots is that tactical information, such as the current deployment situation, is automatically displayed via the digital map. Moreover, radar images generated by the airborne radar system can be displayed on the map. The delivery time for the generators ordered ranges between 2006 and 2012 and secures the future of highly qualified staff at EADS Defence Electronics. "We regard the fact that we have been given such a significant order for the most important European combat aircraft programmes as confirmation of our technological capabilities. Evidently, the pilots have found the map generators already delivered to be very good", said Bernhard Gerwert, Head of EADS Defence Electronics. EADS Defence Electronics can fall back on many years of experience in the area of displaying digital maps. Digital map generators, such as DKG 3 or EuroGrid, have already been successfully used in some cases for many years in both civil and military helicopters, including the Tiger and NH90. The DMG system will also be used for the new European A400M transport aircraft. To date, 160 digital map generators have been supplied for combat aircraft. The DMG product family for flying platforms is based on the latest technologies, with software-oriented solutions being used for displaying the maps.
