Widely tunable mid-and long-wave infrared (8-12 um) laser belongs to the atmospheric window range and the human eye safety range and has important application requirements in the field of Lidar.

A study published in Scientific Reports describes a high-efficiency mid- and long-wave optical parametric oscillator pump source: Ho: YAG laser, the system achieves high-efficiency 2.1 um laser output by scanning and optimizing the pump laser wavelength.

The research was led by the Laser Engineering Center with the Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

According to the temperature tuning characteristics of VBG, the wavelength of Tm: YLF laser continuous tunability ranges from 1906.04-1908.83 nm, corresponding to a linewidth of less than 0.41 nm. By scanning and optimizing the wavelength of the pump light, the Ho: YAG laser output with a light-to-light conversion efficiency of 59.12% and a slope efficiency of 68.26% is achieved under the center wavelength of the pump source of 1907.36 nm.

The research team used the Ho: YAG laser as the pump source of ZGP-OPO and obtained a high-efficiency tunable long-wave infrared laser under type I phase matching, with a tuning range of 8.02-9.15 um.

This research lays the foundation for the development of all-solid-state mid- and long-wave lasers and is expected to greatly expand the Lidar applications.

NASA and HAARP conclude asteroid experiment
Fairbanks AK (SPX) Jan 01, 2023
A powerful transmitter in remote Alaska sent long wavelength radio signals into space Tuesday with the purpose of bouncing them off an asteroid to learn about its interior. The asteroid, 2010 XC15, is estimated to be about 500 feet across and is passing by Earth at two lunar distances, which is twice the distance between the Earth and the moon. Results of Tuesday's experiment at the High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program research facility at Gakona could aid efforts to defend Earth f ... read more
