U.S. chip giant Intel says its new fourth-generation Core processors will serve as the foundation for a wave of new ultrabooks and 2-in-1 devices.

Intel is banking on the new family of processors, unveiled Monday at Computex Taipei 2013 in Taiwan, rejuvenating a PC market seeing declining sales as consumers turn to smartphones and tablets for their computing needs.

In Taipei, company Executive Vice President Tom Kilroy said Intel has more than 50 different 2-in-1 designs in the pipeline across a range of prices, ZDNet reported.

Intel characterized 2-in-1's as devices that "deliver a PC when you need it and a tablet when you want it."

The new chips can deliver a 50 percent increase in battery life "in active workloads" over the previous generation, Intel said.

Traditional laptops and desktops as well as 2-in-1's with the new processors are set to begin arriving this summer, it said.
