Iran continues to support Iraq insurgents: Pentagon
Washington (AFP) Dec 18, 2007 Iran continues to funnel weapons and supplies to Shiite insurgents in Iraq, the Pentagon said in its quarterly report for Congress out Tuesday. "There has been no identified decrease in Iranian training and funding of illegal Shia militias in Iraq," the report says. "Teheran support for Shia militant groups who attack Coalition and Iraq forces remains a significant impediment to progress towards stabilization." The report called Tehran's continued support for Iraq's Shia militant groups "a significant impediment" to stabilizing Iraq's security situation. It pointed out that in late September, Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad promised to Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki to help cut off Iranian weapons, funding and other support for Iraq insurgents and militias. However, the report said that there "has been no identified decrease in Iranian training and funding of illegal Shia militias in Iraq." "The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force provides many of the explosives and ammunition used by these groups," the report said.
