LockMart Announces Alcoa As Principal Team Member To Compete For Joint Light Tactical Vehicle Program
Owego NY (SPX) Nov 21, 2007 Alcoa Defense has joined the Lockheed Martin team that will compete to build the armed services' next-generation family of light military trucks known as the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV). Intended to replace the ubiquitous High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), JLTV variants will give the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps a high-performance vehicle designed to carry mission payloads, survive multiple threats and still remain readily transportable by heavy lift helicopters and cargo aircraft. Sensors and communications systems integrated onto the JLTV will significantly improve battlefield situational awareness and interoperability with other JLTV vehicles. Lockheed Martin Systems Integration, Owego, NY, will serve as the prime contractor and systems integrator providing overall vehicle design, advanced systems, net-centric capabilities and logistics. Alcoa Defense will supply materials knowledge, design services and aluminum components that will give the vehicle its structural strength at reduced weight. Principal team member BAE Mobility and Protection Systems (formerly Armor Holdings) will provide the advanced armor solutions, and production facilities for high volume assembly. "Alcoa will improve exponentially - and in an affordable manner - the mission capability of our solution for the next generation of tactical wheeled vehicles," said Louis DeSantis, vice president and general manager of Systems Solutions at Lockheed Martin Systems Integration - Owego. "We are proud to partner with Lockheed Martin on this critical program," said Dave Dobson, president, Alcoa Defense. "Through Alcoa's proven ground transportation design and materials expertise, we are able to make Lockheed Martin's JLTV lighter, faster and stronger." In October, at the Army Association's convention in Washington, D.C., Lockheed Martin unveiled the team's first JLTV prototype - the Combat Tactical Vehicle variant. Used as an engineering test bed, the prototype vehicle will undergo extensive road testing this winter. The U.S. Army is expected to release a formal request for proposals for technology development of the JLTV in early 2008. In 2006, Lockheed Martin was awarded a contract to build a technology demonstration vehicle for the second phase of the U.S. Army's Future Tactical Truck Systems (FTTS) Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration (ACTD). The FTTS ACTD will help refine the requirements for the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle.
