Offshore wind to bring $3.4 billion to British economy

Leaders dedicate 300 MW wind energy project in Alberta
Calgary, Alberta (UPI) Jul 16, 2013 - The dedication of a 300-megawatt wind energy project in Alberta underscores the provincial commitment to renewable energy, a provincial leader said.

Alberta Energy Minister Diana McQueen was on hand for Tuesday's dedication of the Blackspring Ridge wind energy project in Vulcan County, located in the south of the province. The 300 MW of power expected from the project will help meet the energy needs of about 140,000 average households.

"The Blackspring Ridge project is a joint effort between industry and government that demonstrates Alberta's commitment to renewable energy development," McQueen said in a statement.

The project is being developed by EDF EN Canada Inc. and Enbridge Inc. Blackspring Ridge received more than $10 million in support from the Climate Change and Emissions Management Corp., an independent agency created in 2009 to usher in a low-carbon provincial economy.

Enbridge is a leader in the project's development. The company says it's the second largest developer of wind energy in Canada.

Blackspring Ridge is part of its effort to generate 1 kilowatts of renewable energy for every kilowatt of conventional electricity it consumes.

The British government said Wednesday it signed off on plans to build the 700 megawatt Rampion wind farm off the coast of Sussex.

German utility company E.ON is leading development of the offshore installation that should be completed by 2019. The British government said it expects the project to bring in more than $3.4 billion worth of investments to its economy.

Signing off on the project Wednesday, the British government said the Rampion wind farm would generate enough energy to meet the annual needs of 450,000 households.

The government said the consent decision is a testament to its commitment to renewable energy resources.

"We're driving investment in our energy security, and our plans have made us number one in the world for investment in offshore wind energy," British Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Davey said in a statement.

DECC in a recent assessment said wind power dominated the energy sector with offshore wind capacity increasing 39 percent in the three-month period ending in February and onshore wind up 68 percent compared to the same period one year ago.
