Air Force orders Joint Programmable Fuzes from Kaman
Washington (UPI) Nov 29, 2017 - The Kaman Corp reports that it is to produce an undisclosed number of Joint Programmable Fuzes for the U.S. Air Force and the militaries of 18 other nations.

The order for the JPF -- the first under Option 13 of an existing contract -- carries an expected value of $85 million, the company said. Deliveries of the fuzes are expected to take place next year and in 2019.

"We look forward to continuing our relationship with the U.S. Air Force and satisfying demand for the JPF, the most highly reliable and operationally flexible bomb fuze in the U.S. Military's arsenal," Richard Barnhart, president of Kaman Aerospace Group, said in a press release. "The JPF is a strong contributor to the performance of the [the company's] Aerospace segment, and with this order and the increased demand we have seen worldwide for the JPF, we believe this contribution will continue for many years to come."

Kaman has provided Joint Programmable Fuzes to the U.S Air Force since 2002. The fuze allows weapon settings to be programmed on wing in flight. Among the aircraft using weapons the fuzes are general purpose bombs, and guided bombs that use JDAM or Paveway kits.

Kamen said the fuzes will be produced at its facilities in Orlando, Fla., and Middletown, Conn.

Oshkosh Defense LLC., has been awarded a contract for various motor vehicle parts and accessories for use by the U.S. Marine Corps as the Defense Department continues to modernize its fleet of military vehicles.

The deal, announced Tuesday by the Department of Defense, is worth more than $71.7 million under a firm-firm-fixed-price, indefinite-quantity contract, which means the U.S. government will not reimburse Oshkosh for additional costs that may arise.

Officials say the deal is a three-year base contract with two one-year option periods. The $71.7 million cost is the maximum dollar amount for the totality of the contract, including options, according to a Defense Department press statement.

Work on the contract will be performed in Wisconsin and is expected to be completed in Nov. 2022. Defense working capital funds from fiscal 2018 through 2023 will be used to fund the deal.

In September, Oshkosh Defense received $466.8 million on a modification to an existing contract for the production of the Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles for the U.S. Army.

The Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles is a series of armored tactical cargo trucks. Variants of the platform are used for troop and equipment transport, vehicle recovery and other tasks in a utility role. The cabs of the trucks are fully armored with bullet and shrapnel resistant plates, and ballistic glass for the windshield and windows for crew protection.

The A1P2 variant of the FMTV is the standard cargo version of the truck for moving equipment and supplies.

That contract is expected to be completed in August 2018.

Artificial muscles give 'superpower' to robots
Miami (AFP) Nov 27, 2017
Inspired by the folding technique of origami, US researchers said Monday they have crafted cheap, artificial muscles for robots that give them the power to lift up to 1,000 times their own weight. The advance offers a leap forward in the field of soft robotics, which is fast replacing an older generation of robots that were jerky and rigid in their movements, researchers say. "It's like ... read more
