Qatar's intention to procure Javelin missiles through the U.S. Foreign Military Sales program has been given the official green light.

The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency, which handles the FMS program, said approval had come from the U.S. State Department.

"The proposed sale will improve Qatar's capability to meet current and future threats and provide greater security for its critical oil and natural gas infrastructure," DSCA said in its notification to Congress. "Qatar will use the enhanced capability to strengthen its homeland defense.

The possible $20 million FMS package would involve 50 Javelin Guided Missiles and 10 Command Launch Units with Integrated Day/Thermal Sights.

Also included in the possible sale are: Javelin simulation rounds, an Enhanced Basic Skills Trainer, and life-cycle contractor support.

Lockheed Martin would be the principal contractor. Implementation will require multiple trips by U.S. government and contractor representatives to Qatar for equipment de-processing, fielding, system checkout, training, and technical logistics support.
