Twin explosions rock Iraqi holy city

Twin explosions, one of which appeared to have been caused by a car bomb, rocked Iraq's holy Shiite shrine city of Karbala on Monday, witnesses and an AFP correspondent said.

The blasts caused casualties but the correspondent was unable immediately to determine whether anyone had died.

The first blast came when a parked vehicle exploded in front of a restaurant frequented by pilgrims to the city, 110 kilometres (70 miles) south of Baghdad, at around 12:45 pm (0945 GMT).

Around 15 minutes later, a second bomb went off at the same site, in the al-Belladiyat neighbourhood of central Karbala.

The restaurant is about 200 metres (yards) from Karbala's provincial government offices and its regional military command centre.
