President Xi Jinping recently inaugurated the Information Support Force of the People's Liberation Army, declaring it essential for modern warfare during a ceremony at the Central Military Commission (CMC) headquarters in Beijing.

In the presence of PLA senior officials, Xi entrusted the unit's flag to its commander Lieutenant General Bi Yi and political commissar General Li Wei. He emphasized the force's mission to evolve into a modernized entity, highlighting its creation as a significant directive from the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the CMC to fortify the PLA and refine the military structure with Chinese characteristics.

Xi remarked, "The establishment of the Information Support Force marks a critical advancement in our national defense and military modernization, significantly contributing to our military's readiness for new-era tasks." He described the force as a vital component of the PLA, pivotal in leveraging network information systems for high-quality development and warfare capabilities.

Xi insisted on the force's unwavering loyalty to the Party and stressed its primary function in information management to support combat operations, ensuring the protection and seamless integration of information resources into the military's operations.

He further urged the Information Support Force to promote innovation and collaboration within various military systems and enhance asset sharing to support modern combat needs, reflecting Chinese characteristics.

This restructuring also led to the renaming of the Strategic Support Force, established in 2015, with its previous roles absorbed by the newly defined PLA Space Force and PLA Cyberspace Force, now recognized officially as distinct entities.

Senior Colonel Wu Qian, spokesperson for the Defense Ministry, detailed the PLA's revised organizational structure, which includes four major services and several branches, emphasizing the strategic importance of the Space Force in global space collaboration and security.

Wu also addressed concerns about the Cyberspace Force, clarifying its focus on bolstering China's cyber defense capabilities to safeguard national cyberspace sovereignty and security against increasing threats.
