Pentagon Says Missile Defense Test Only A Learning Experience

An attempt to intercept a long-range missile over the Pacific Saturday will not be a "pass/fail" test for an operational missile defense system but an effort to learn more, the Pentagon said Friday. Saturday's test marks a fifth attempt to intercept an intercontinental missile with another missile -- already achieved twice, most recently on July 14. Test Delayed

Presidents George W. Bush and Vladimir Putin head for their next meeting in Texas Wednesday, after seeing eye to eye on deep cuts in the US nuclear arsenal but failing to come closer on missile defense. "We intend to dismantle conclusively the vestiges of the Cold War and to develop (an) entirely new partnership for (the) long term," Russian President Putin said at a joint press conference on the first day of a three-day summit.

    After attending a space-based training course, six Air Force engineers are moving the Air Force toward a true aerospace force. The four-week Aerospace Vehicle Test Course wrapped up Nov. 2 at U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards. Now in its second year, the course is designed to prepare space testers for an increasing number of programs using trans-atmospheric vehicles, space-based assets and sensor-to-shooter systems, said Maj. Kelly Greene, AVTC course director.
