US slaps sanctions on Macedonian firm, businessman for missile exports
WASHINGTON (AFP) Dec 24, 2003
The United States on Wednesday imposed trade sanctions on a Macedonian company and a Macedonian businessman for the sale of missile technology deemed illegal under US law, the State Department said.

The sanctions, which include a two-year ban on all contracts with the US government and export licenses, were imposed on Blagoja Samakoski and the firm Mikrosam under the US Arms Export Control Act and related regulations, the department said.

These foreign entities "have engaged in missile technology proliferation activities that require the imposition of the sanctions described in" the Arms Export Control Act and the Export Administration Act," it said in a notice published in the Federal Register.

"It is deemed that suspending the above-named entities from participating in any activities subject to ... the Arms Export Control Act would be in furtherance of the national security and foreign policy of the United States," it said.

In addition, Samakoski and Mikrosam were found to have violated an executive order, first instituted by former president Bill Clinton, that calls for sanctions to be imposed on entities which traffic in weapons of mass destruction and "the means to deliver them," the department said.

Those penalties bar all imports from the entities into the United States and ban any US assistance from going to them.

The notice did not say what specific items had been transferred or to what country the items had been sold.
