A police spokeswoman said officers were tipped off about the haul before pouncing on the van on Tuesday, but declined to provide further details on the vehicle or its intended destination.

"By Montreal standards this is an important seizure," said spokeswoman Lynne Labelle, adding that tests were being carried out on the markings on the guns to establish their origin.
