List of countries contributing forces to Iraq coalition

Britain looked set Tuesday to agree to a US request to send troops into violence-plagued areas of Iraq, a move opponents warned could see the country's 8,500 soldiers dragged further into the conflict, with the risk of mounting casualties.

Here is an updated list, according to the latest figures available to AFP, of the number of troops contributed by countries to the US-led coalition.


   1.   United States: almost 140,000
   2.   Britain: about 8,500
   3.   Italy: about 3,000
   4.   South Korea: 2,800 (another 800 soldiers are due in November, and a 
South Korean air transport contingent travelled to Kuwait last week to support the Korean troops deployed in northern Iraq)

   5.   Poland: 2,500 (phased withdrawal planned from early next year)
   6.   Ukraine: about 1,650
   7.   Netherlands: about 1,300
   8.   Australia: about 850
   9.   Romania: nearly 800
10. Japan: about 600

11. Denmark: about 500

12. Bulgaria: 480

13. El Salvador: 380

14. Hungary: 300

15. Mongolia: about 170

16. Georgia: 157 (300 commandos to replace them end October-early November)

17. Fiji: 155

18. Azerbaijan: about 150

19. Norway: about 150

20. Portugal: 128 (scheduled to end mission in November)

21. Lithuania: 120
