EADS/Thales issue to be aired at Franco-British summit: Chirac spokesman PARIS (AFP) Nov 16, 2004 The issue of the possibility of merging European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company and French defence technology firm Thales will be raised on Thursday as part of the Franco-British summit, a spokesman for President Jacques Chirac's office said late Tuesday. "Naturally we are talking about it with the German governemnt and we fully intend to talk about it with the British government," spokesman Jerome Bonnafont told reporters. The British government earlier denied reports that Prime Minister Tony Blair had written to Chirac expressing concern over a possible merger between the two groups. The finance minister of France, Nicolas Sarkozy, said Tuesday he had not approached EADS or Thales about such a tie-up and that he and German Economy Minister Wolfgang Clement had stressed the need to maintain the Franco-German balance at EADS. The two finance ministers attended a meeting in Berlin Tuesday of a special Franco-German working group set up to explore possibilities for industrial cooperation between the two countries.
