"We are supporters of dialogue and negotiation and we believe that the problem can be solved through the legal framework. I don't believe there will be sanctions because there is no reason for sanctions," Ahmadinejad told journalists at the end of a visit here.

The United States has been pushing for the UN Security Council to move quickly to impose sanctions on Iran, after Tehran ignored a resolution to halt sensitive uranium enrichment by August 31.

"It would be preferable for US officials not to make angry statements, because we have been under American sanctions for 27 years already," Ahmadinejad said through an interpreter.

Uranium enrichment is the process that makes nuclear reactor fuel but also atom bomb material.

Iran says its nuclear program is peaceful, and it has the right to nuclear energy under international treaties.

Ahmadinejad spoke ahead of leaving Senegal for the Cuban capital Havana to attend a summit of the Non-Aligned Movement states.

DAKAR, 14 sept 2006 (AFP) - Le président iranien Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a indiqué mercredi soir qu'il ne "croyait pas qu'il y aurait des sanctions" du Conseil de sécurité de l'Onu contre son pays, comme le souhaite Washington après le refus de Téhéran de suspendre son enrichissement d'uranium.

"Nous sommes partisans du dialogue et de la négociation et nous croyons qu'on peut résoudre le problème dans un cadre de justice. Je ne crois pas qu'il y aura des sanctions parce qu'il n'y a pas de raison qu'il y ait des sanctions", a déclaré le président iranien au terme d'une visite au Sénégal.

"Il serait préférable que les responsables américains ne se prononcent pas de façon fâcheuse, cela fait déjà 27 ans que nous subissons des sanctions américaines", a-t-il ajouté, selon une traduction officielle, du persan en français, effectuée par un traducteur iranien.

Le président Ahmadinejad s'exprimait devant quelques journalistes, à l'aéroport de Dakar.
