Israel PM heads to Russia after Putin Iran visit JERUSALEM, Oct 17 (AFP) Oct 17, 2007 Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert will visit Russia on Thursday for talks with President Vladimir Putin on Iran's nuclear programme and Middle East peace efforts, his office said Wednesday. "The two intend to discuss a series of regional issues, including the peace process with the Palestinians, Iran's threat and attempt to acquire nuclear weapons, and developments in the region," a statement said. The snap visit was announced just one day after Putin paid the first visit to Iran by a Kremlin chief since World War II, where he distanced himself from Western warnings over the country's controversial nuclear programme. Meanwhile, Israel's Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni is to make a visit to China shortly for talks which will include discussions on Iran's nuclear programme, her office said Wednesday. Israel considers the Islamic republic its biggest foe and considers its nuclear programme a cover for developing atomic weapons -- a charge that Tehran vehemently denies. Israel is widely regarded as the region's sole if undeclared nuclear power. All rights reserved. 2005 Agence France-Presse.
