Israel's military said Thursday Iranian missiles were heading towards Israel and that air defences were active as AFP correspondents heard blasts from Jerusalem, before Israel announced "wide-scale" strikes on Tehran. The alert came after Iranian media reported that the country's Revolutionary Guards had carried out a joint missile operation with Tehran's Lebanese ally Hezbollah.
"A short while ago, the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) identified missiles launched from Iran toward the territory of the State of Israel," the military said on its official Telegram channel, calling on people in affected areas to head to shelters.
"Defensive systems are operating to intercept the threat."
It later added that a "wide-scale wave of strikes" on Tehran was underway.
Sirens sounded across Israel, including in Jerusalem according to AFP correspondents.
The Magen David Adom emergency services said that there were no reported casualties following the missile fire, although paramedics were deployed to treat individuals who fell on the way to shelters.
The Israeli military later said people could leave emergency shelters.
