A Sudanese army strike on a displaced persons camp in the western Darfur region killed six civilians and wounded dozens more on Monday, a rights group said.Near-daily drone strikes by both the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have escalated in recent months in the brutal conflict that began in April 2023.
Monday's strike hit Al-Hamidiyah camp near Zalingei, the capital of Central Darfur state, at dawn, according to Emergency Lawyers, a Sudanese legal advocacy group documenting abuses throughout the conflict.
The group said shells destroyed several homes inside the camp, which shelters thousands of displaced people, mostly women and children fleeing Darfur's fighting, and provides essential aid.
A medical source told AFP that 15 injured people were taken to Zalingei Hospital, some in critical condition.
Nearly 700 civilians have been killed in drone strikes by both sides since January, according to the United Nations.
The war has already killed tens of thousands, uprooted more than 11 million from their homes and triggered what the UN describes as the world's largest displacement and hunger crises.
Famine was declared last year in El-Fasher in North Darfur and Kadugli in South Kordofan, with 20 more areas at risk, a UN-backed assessment found.
