Ethiopia says Sudan arming anti-Ethiopian mercenaries Nairobi, May 5 (AFP) May 05, 2026 The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have been arming anti-Ethiopian mercenaries and facilitating incursions into Ethiopia, its foreign ministry said Tuesday. Addis Ababa accuses Sudan's army of supporting Tigrayan rebels from northern Ethiopia, who fought a brutal civil war against the federal government from 2020 to 2022. "Sudan is serving as a hub for various anti-Ethiopian forces," Ethiopia's foreign ministry said in a statement on X. "The Sudanese Armed Forces have also provided arms and financial support to these mercenaries, thereby facilitating their incursions along Ethiopia's western frontier," it added. The statement also rejected "baseless accusations" made in a press conference earlier Tuesday by the Sudanese army-aligned government's foreign minister, who accused Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates of conducting a drone strike on Khartoum's airport. In March, the Sudanese military accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group of launching drone attacks "from inside Ethiopian territory", the first public allegation of Ethiopian involvement in the conflict. Drone attacks by both Sudan's army and the RSF, at war since April 2023, have intensified across the country in recent months. The UAE has been widely accused of arming the RSF, but has repeatedly denied the allegations, while Ethiopia has denied hosting RSF and UAE forces on its territory. |
