Tanker fire off Oman coast: marine monitoring agency
Dubai, June 11 (AFP) Jun 11, 2026
A tanker near the blockaded Strait of Hormuz suffered a fire in its engine room, a marine monitoring agency said on Thursday, without revealing the cause of the blaze.

"Local authorities have reported a tanker has experienced a fire in the engine room," United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said.

The incident happened 21 nautical miles northeast of Sohar in Oman, it added.

The Indian embassy in Oman said on X that the crew of the ship Jalveer were being evacuated by the Omani navy, without mentioning the nationality of the crew nor the cause of the fire.

According to British marine security firm Vanguard, the Guinea-Bissau-flagged tanker had 20 crew members aboard.

On Wednesday, the United States attacked a tanker off the coast of Oman, killing three of its crew.

Washington said it was attempting to export Iranian oil despite the US blockade on Iranian ports.
