Trump says Iran deal to be signed Sunday, opening Hormuz
Washington, United States, June 13 (AFP) Jun 13, 2026
US President Donald Trump said Saturday a long-awaited deal to end the war in the Middle East was set to be signed Sunday, and that it would lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

However, uncertainty remained after weeks of inconclusive negotiations on a long-term peace agreement following an April 8 truce, with Iran earlier indicating that no signing would take place Sunday.

"The Deal is scheduled to get signed tomorrow, and immediately after it is signed, the Hormuz Strait is OPEN TO ALL," Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform on Saturday.

However, Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei had said, according to the IRNA news agency: "We have to wait and see about the exact time of signing; although it will not be tomorrow."

In his post, Trump also indicated the United States would take possession of and destroy Iran's stockpile of enriched uranium -- despite Tehran's insistence on its right to enrich uranium.

"At the appropriate time, when all is calm, we will go in and get the Nuclear Dust, buried deep under the powerful sunken granite mountains... downblend and destroy it, whether in Iran, or the United States," Trump said.

"We look forward to working with Iran, and the entire Middle East, long into the future."

The US president also stressed that "no money will exchange hands" as part of the deal with the Islamic republic.

At the same time, Trump's post also contained a warning to Tehran to fully implement the plan or face serious consequences.

"Hopefully, this process will all work out quickly, easily, and smoothly," the US president wrote. "If it doesn't, we have the ultimate alternative, hopefully never to be used again!"

Earlier Saturday, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whose country has played a crucial role as mediator, said a deal could be finalized imminently.

"We are closer to a peace deal than ever before," Sharif wrote on X.

"With finalization likely expected in the next 24 hours, Pakistan is preparing for the electronic signing of the peace deal immediately after, followed by technical level talks next week," he added.

The Strait of Hormuz -- a key maritime trade route carrying oil and gas from the Gulf to markets worldwide -- has been blocked by Tehran since the outbreak of the war in late February.

The United States has responded with its own blockade of Iranian ports in an attempt to choke off the country's energy exports, and said Saturday it had downed multiple Iranian drones over the strait.
