China Wants To Expand Sino-US Military Relations

Cao described US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's visit to China last year as playing "a positive role in strengthening mutual understanding and cementing our military ties".

China is ready to expand its military relations with the United States, Chinese Defense Minister Cao Gangchuan said on Tuesday.

Cao, who is also vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission and a state councillor, made the remarks during a meeting with a delegation from the US House of Representatives, the Xinhua news agency reported.

Cao said both sides should make efforts to upgrade military ties to bring them on a par with the overall bilateral relationship, which he described as being on a sound footing.

"We are glad to see our military ties gradually resume and develop in recent years with joint efforts of both sides," Cao was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

He described US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's visit to China last year as playing "a positive role in strengthening mutual understanding and cementing our military ties".

Cao also praised Washington for its adherence to the One-China policy, a reference to Taiwan.

"To properly settle this issue is of vital importance to the stable growth of Sino-US relations," Xinhua cited him as saying.

Taiwan has been ruled separately from China since 1949 but Beijing considers the island part of its territory awaiting reunification, and has said it is willing to go to war to achieve that objective.

The United States is a major ally of Taiwan, to which it has sold significant quantities of military hardware.
